HydroPower Optimization Software

MaxHydro is a set of interlinked computer programs that can be used as a decision support tool for hydropower system planning, analysis and operation. Using a mathematical model of a hydropower system, the programs provide an optimal or best-fit solution to the operational dilemmas faced by hydropower system operators. Use of the program can result in significant improvements to daily energy production or revenues. It is an optimization program because it is based on mathematical formulation of the hydropower system and provides an optimal solution to the problem depending on the selected objective function taking into account numerous constraints.

How Does MaxHydro Work?

The latest version of MaxHydro can accommodate up to nine (9) reservoirs and associated power stations in one optimization. With the introduction of "system decomposition" additional reservoirs downstream from the main reservoirs can be included in the optimization as a simulation reservoirs with pre-defined operating rules. The benefits obtained from the additional reservoirs are included in the overall objective function and the global optimal solution of the system is obtained. MaxHydro can easily switch between different system layouts by a click of a button.

Input data depends on the optimization criteria chosen in the initial setup and number or reservoirs included in the optimization.

The optimization problem is formulated in the options dialog of MaxHydro. The user will formulate the problem following the flowchart on the left.
